Care Guide
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Jewellery, precious; adorned for centuries, an embellishment, signifying style, personality, a decorative expression, an heirloom.
Precious metals are robust but (precious) and are not indestructible, unlike stainless steel and titanium – to name but a few far stronger metals, can show signs of wear and tear. Heavy scratches can become visible on the surface gemstones can become dislodged, dents can show up on the edges, claws holding gemstones into place (also called prongs) can be torn away, chains can be snapped and broken.
Silver, 9ct golds, 18ct golds and platinum all have differing wearability factors some show signs of scratches very easily, where another like platinum, will move across the surface due to its density.
Jewellery looks best and withstands the test of time when it is worn with consideration. If your aim is to pass it down to future generations it is best to care for it and be aware of activities you decide to do during your day-to-day lifestyle, and; how that might affect the look of your jewellery piece, and how it might harm it. You would be surprised to know how easily a gemstone; or ring can be damaged, with that accidental knock against a wall.
Jewellery can be delicate, so we encourage our customers to take care when wearing it daily.
For longevity we advise our customers to do the following.
- Remove your rings when you are doing rough or heavy work - gym/weight training, gardening, moving furniture.
- Remove your jewellery (especially pearls, opals) when showering, swimming in chorine or the ocean - pearls can come from the ocean the adhesive does not!
- Remove your jewellery when spraying hairspray, perfume and lotion - all metals become dulled and tarnished from contact with chemicals.
- Please do not use jewellery cleaners on pearls and opals - we have some tips on cleaning jewellery if you do not wish to take it to a professional.
- Remove your jewellery off at night – prevents it from becoming tangled or broken while you sleep.
RHODIUM PLATING AND HARD GOLD PLATING
Sterling silver 18ct (K) yellow hard gold-plated pieces and white gold plated (9ct and 18ct) can be re-plated at a cost to the customer plus postage. The lifetime of the plating is dependent upon each individual and how the item is worn daily. We generally expect plating to wear after 12 – 18 months of wear.
Re-plating the item is at a cost to the customer plus the postage.
RE-THREADING NECKLACES AND BRACELETS
Necklaces and bracelets strung onto silk or nylon thread will weaken over time, depending on how often the piece is worn and how it is cared for. A necklace should be re-threaded every 18 months, and a bracelet if worn more frequently, 12 months. Look for visible gaps between the beads or pearls; this will indicate it might be time to get it re-threaded.
